Mortal Kombat: Songs Inspired by the Warriors (tracklist included)

15 Apr

With the brand new Mortal Kombat’s April 19th release date quickly approaching, I thought I’d take a minute to comment on the amazing soundtrack.

Instead of just going for the standard fighting game soundtrack complete with orchestral ebbs and flows possibly mixed with hard-driving rock aspects, this game went in a wholly different direction.

This game’s soundtrack is comprised completely of original tracks made by various current DJs and producers. Each of these electronic music artists was given the task of creating a song for a specific character. Here’s the tracklist so you have an idea

01. Scorpion – JFK (of MSTRKRFT)
02. Mileena – Tokimonsta
03. Sub-Zero – Harvard Bass
04. Liu Kang – Congorock
05. Goro – Bird Peterson
06. Reptile – Skrillex
07. Raiden – 9th Wonder
08. Johnny Cage – LA Riots
09. Baraka – Run DMT
10. Kung Lao – Felix Cartal
11. Kano – Them Jeans
12. Shao Kahn – Sound Of Stereo

There’s something for everybody on this album…Skrillex’s “Reptile” is a downtempo club feel but with his hard dubstep synths. Run DMT’s “Baraka” is a pulse-pounding drumstep tune. 9th Wonder captures a hip hop feel with his theme for Raiden. There’s even some standard electro-house in the “Liu Kang,” “Sub-Zero,” and “Johnny Cage” tracks.

But even though this soundtrack covers so much ground, all of the songs seem to be matched up well for the game and I could imagine many late nights playing this game and listening to the various original songs by these great artists.

Skrillex – Reptile

LA Riots – Johnny Cage

Skrillex mix of the Korn collaboration, “Get Up”

14 Apr

I talked about this song a couple weeks ago when only a 14 second long preview clip was available. Well Skrillex just uploaded this to his facebook and youtube account.

This specific version is called The Skrillex Directors Cut so I’m sure Korn will release a version that is more centered around the heavy rock sections because this version is structured much more like a modern dubstep song. Here it is, his collaboration with Korn, “Get Up.”

Document One EP soon to be released on Never Say Die Records

13 Apr

Not much to say here that isn’t already in the title.

It’s nice to see this powerful duo get some much deserved recognition. I’m a huge fan of their work and they deserved to get an opportunity like this. Never Say Die is a strong label when it comes to dubstep and drum & bass, so it’s safe to say that Document One could easily blow up very soon.

Take a listen to the four previews that they just uploaded to soundcloud yesterday. So far, my favorite has got to be the retro, goofy, and fun “Claptrack.”

An unlikely collaboration — Skrillex vs Korn

31 Mar

Although Sonny Moore (aka Skrillex) was heavily invested in the hardcore scene a few years back when he was the frontman for From First To Last, it still caught me off guard to hear that he’s going to be doing a collaboration with the band Korn.

There is only a super short clip available now, but it is sounding fantastic so far. I’ll be updating this post as new developments are made.

Upcoming Skrillex tracks

29 Mar

Ever since his release, Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites, fans have been waiting so patiently for new Skrillex songs. He’s previewed many songs in his live shows but has had very little in the way of official releases. In this article, I’ll show 3 new songs of his. Although all of the previews are low quality, they’re at least some sort of sneak peek.

First up is a song that Skrillex has been playing live for a couple months now, but it got an official premier on BBC’s March 22 Radio 1 program. It’s going to be titled “First of the Year”

This next song has also been played live for a couple months. It’s going to be in the upcoming iteration in the Mortal Kombat series. This is Skrillex’s personal theme music for the character Reptile (it is named after him). Here’s a short clip of it that was ripped from a live streaming session he did.

And here is the official Mortal Kombat commercial that features “Reptile”

Finally, Skrillex linked his twitter followers to a fan’s video of him performing at Laidback Luke’s ‘Super You and Me’ party. The opening track from this set is a brand new drumstep song which is incredibly hard-hitting.

Dodge & Fuski’s “Come Again” EP out today

22 Mar

This hard hitting dubstep duo has been working hard and putting out tons of quality tunes in the past few months. Some of their most notable songs in my opinion are “Four on the Floor,” “Resurrection,” and “Ridin’ High.”

Now they have given us a full release, entitled Come Again EP.
Get it on Beatport here.

Take a listen below to the title track of the EP:

What’s new in dubstep?

21 Mar

In this article I’ll highlight some of the newest and hottest dubstep stuff on late March 2011. You’ll hear new tracks from Dirtyloud, Subvert & Excision, Sluggo & Liquid Stranger, and Nostalgia.

Everyone is now familiar with Dirtyloud after the resounding success of their “Rock It Roll It” remix. It sat at the tip top of the Beatport dubstep charts for weeks and is still in a very good place at #6.
Now they have a new remix. It is of Byob’s “Chillin.” Buy it here on Beatport:

Out now on Rottun Records is a new release from the duo of Excision and Subvert. It’s a two track record, titled “Rude Symphony / Darkness.” It’s doing very well, currently being supported on Beatports “Must Hear Dubstep” chart of the week.
Here’s the link so you can purchase it:

Sluggo is a strong up and comer in the dubstep scene, gaining some recognition along his friends in Helicopter Showdown with their collaborations (listen to “The Wrestler” and “Hostage”). But now Sluggo is pairing up with a different artist, Liquid Stranger. Together they have put out a banger of a dubstep track on Ultragore Recordings titled “Stalkers.” It was released coupled with Helicopter Showdown’s “Hostage,” and it is also featured in Beatports “Must Hear Dubstep” chart.
