Kanye West — live at Coachella

17 Apr

Watching this live feed of Kanye’s shows what an incredible performer he is. I’ll give you guys somewhat of a play-by-play of the end of this amazing set.

He’s not in front of some epic red-accented pyramid with Daft Punk behind him like he was at the 2008 Grammys. He’s not standing atop some faux mountain like he was at the 2010 BET Awards. While he did bring out a troupe of dancers and a large sheet to help him with his live version of “Runaway,” he had very little in the way of jaw dropping props. If nothing else, I think this minimalist show worked greatly in his favor showing how intensely he can move a crowd of thousands with just a mic and some stage presence.

He also split up his show into multiple Acts, which added a theatrical element.

Going back to “Runaway,” (his start of Act 3), he used the large sheet to cover the entire stage while he changed into his iconic solid-red suit and got the sample trigger box out front and center. He did his own sample triggering live and varied them up from the album version by making them much more spastic and fast paced, showing his live energy and ambition. He even went on to improv and sing his heart out to finish the song like he does on the recording in sync with the dancers fading off the stage until only one lonely ballerina was left.

Bon Iver then rejoined Kanye on stage to do his part of “Lost in the World.” Each of the dancers then came back on stage in nude-colored unitards complete with wings, representing the winged beast that was on his original artwork for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (which was eventually not approved due to it’s suggestive theme).

To end the night, he played one of my favorite songs of all time, “Hey Mama.” Not much to say about this one. Of course I was left speechless because this song is so deep and genuine. I can’t seem to get the image of him performing it at the 2008 Grammys right after the unfortunate passing of his mother, Donda West. It’s such an emotional song and it’s only fitting that he ended his epic set with such a heart-felt piece.

He gave a large bow with all of the dancers and backup musicians which was only fitting since it was such a theatrical journey.

Kanye continues to be one of my very favorite musicians of all time.

Jay Electronica – Prelude to a Freestyle

17 Mar

As I have been a long time fan of Jay Electronica, I’m excited to present this little tune. Although its lacking in stellar production value, its clear that Jay just wanted to have some fun in his fickle freestyle over the soulful beat from “Devil in a New Dress”, from Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

While he waits for his next major production, enjoy this video, with clips from his recent tour, which stays true to Jay’s sweet wordplay, and equally thrilling rhymes:
