Childish Gambino’s take on Odd Future, The Weeknd, and whats to come

Hip Hop Update held an interview with Renaissance man Donald Glover AKA Childish Gambino after a show he held in Los Angeles on April 27^th to promote his upcoming IAMDONALD LP.

After getting a snippet of his stirring, energetic performance style, Gambino goes on to discuss a rap group at a similar stage in their musical development as himself, OFWGKTA, and up-and-coming R&B soloist The Weeknd, among other things. Despite having just finished a show, Gambino still conducts himself with the same cheer and wit that is reflected in his music. Check it out:

Childish Gambino does a short live set for a Boise steakhouse

While on tour, Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) stopped at a Boise, Idaho steakhouse and ended up doing an impromptu show for the people there.

First he does “Bitch Look At Me Now” (including the instrumentals from Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks”) and then “Not Going Back” from his new EP.

Childish Gambino — March releases

Early this month on the 8th, Donald Glover gave us his EP for free. If you haven’t heard it, I recommend it HIGHLY. Seriously, this release was absolute fire. His lyrics have reached new heights in word play and he has some beautifully structured melodies as well. Download the EP for free at the link below:

We’ve already heard the banger “Freaks & Geeks,” (along with the Star Slinger remix), but besides that, this EP gives us 4 additional songs which all are insane. My favorite happens to be the final track, “Not Going Back.”

Well, in addition to this amazing EP, Glover has just released a single entitled “The Longest Text Message.” According to his twitter, this song was written and recorded during a drunken Thanksgiving night. Props to him because this song is fantastic. Download it HERE.

Star Slinger remixes Childish Gambino’s “Freaks & Geeks”

Star Slinger, one of my favorite new producers has just made a new remix of Childish Gambino’s (Donald Glover) single “Freaks & Geeks.”

Donald Glover to host 2011 Woodie Awards

Glover has been making a huge impact on today’s hip hop scene (see my post about his new “Freaks & Geeks” music video). It only makes sense that this television, internet, and music personality would be hosting mtvU’s 2011 Woodie Awards.

Donald Glover gaining steam in 2011

Donald Glover (AKA Childish Gambino), is having an amazing year. Along with NBC’s thursday night comedy, Community continuing on strong, Glover’s musical career is really taking off.

Below is the new video for Childish Gambino’s fiery new single “Freeks & Geeks.” If you haven’t already listened to this track, it’s a must. If you thought Glover was a clever writer from his experience writing for 30 Rock or Derrick Comedy, then just take a listen to these lyrics.

Here is another one of his 2011 projects. It’s a Jamie XX remix of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep,” which features an awesome verse from Childish Gambino.
